The announcement of a new sequel for the popular anime “Jujutsu Kaisen,” based on Gege Akutami‘s manga, has excited fans. This sequel, adapting the “Culling Game” arc, follows the conclusion of the anime’s second season, which consisted of 23 episodes. The studio MAPPA, known for its previous work on “Jujutsu Kaisen” seasons and movies, will continue producing this sequel.
The anime’s direction is now under Shouta Goshozono, replacing Sunghoo Park, who directed the first season. The production team includes Hiroshi Seko in scriptwriting and supervision, Tadashi Hiramatsu in character design and animation direction, and Hiroaki Tsutsumi, Yoshimasa Terui, and Alisa Okehazama in soundtrack composition.
Some Context
The second season of “Jujutsu Kaisen” centers around events in 2006 at the Tokyo Jujutsu High School. It narrates the adventures of Satoru Gojou and Suguru Getou, two powerful special-grade sorcerers and best friends, facing moral challenges and conflicts while trying to protect Riko Amanai. Twelve years later, the institute’s students and sorcerers become the first line of defense against an increasing number of high-level ‘curses.’
While the sequel announcement has raised expectations, it has not been officially labeled as “third season,” leaving open the possibility of it being a season of OVAs or a movie. This non-specific approach has been a common tactic by production houses to generate anticipation among viewers.
Notably, the series has experienced significant directional changes, with public complaints from some animators and episode directors about production conditions during the second season. Complaints include workload and tight deadlines, a recurring issue in the anime industry. Despite these challenges, “Jujutsu Kaisen” has maintained its popularity and quality, acclaimed by critics and fans alike.
The series, which started in Weekly Shonen Jump in March 2018, has been a commercial and critical success. It follows Yuji Itadori, a high school student with extraordinary physical strength. His life changes drastically when he becomes involved in the world of sorcerers and curses after encountering a cursed artifact. Guided by the powerful sorcerer Satoru Gojo, Itadori enrolls in Tokyo Jujutsu High School to combat these curses.
“Jujutsu Kaisen‘s” success is also evident in its movie adaptation, “Jujutsu Kaisen 0,” released in December 2021. The film, focusing on events before the main series, was also well-received and helped increase the franchise’s popularity.
With the anticipation created by the sequel announcement, fans are eager to see how the “Culling Game” arc will unfold and how the series’ distinctive narrative and visual style will be adapted in this new installment. Expectations are high, and the “Jujutsu Kaisen” community eagerly awaits more details about the sequel, including the release date and additional previews.
