Indeed, the official website for the animated films “Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction” unveiled just over a week ago a new promotional trailer lasting a minute and a half, in which a preview of the main themes for each of the feature films can be heard. The theme for the first is titled “Zett-Zett-Zett-Zett-Zettai Seiiki“, and for the second, “Seishun Ōka“, both performed by singers Ano and Lilas Ikuta, who will also lend their voices to the two protagonists of this adaptation of the well-known manga by Inio Asano.
The first of the movies will premiere in Japanese cinemas very soon, on March 22, and the second just a month later, on April 19. Both feature films mark the debut of Production+h, a studio that has enlisted the talent of Tomoyuki Kurokawa (Shinrei Tantei Yakumo, Bokura no Yoake, Seikoku no Dragonar) to direct both projects. On the other hand, the writing and supervision of the scripts are handled by Reiko Yoshida (A Silent Voice, Violet Evergarden, Tamako Market), Nobutake Ito (The Tatami Galaxy, Kaiba, Kemonozume) directs the animation and adapts the characters to the animated format, Taro Umebayashi (Space Dandy, Yuri!!! on Ice) is in charge of the musical composition, and the art direction falls to Mika Nishimura (Dorohedoro).
Regarding the voice cast, as announced so far, it is composed as follows:
- Lilas Ikuta as Kadode Koyama
- Ano as Ouran Nakagawa
- Atsumi Tanezaki as Kiho Kurihara
- Miyuri Shimabukuro as Ai Demoto
- Saeko Oki as Rin Hirama
- Azumi Waki as Futaba Takemoto
- Ryoko Shiraishi as Makoto Tainuma
- Miyu Irino as Keita Oba
- Koki Uchiyama as Kohiruimaki
- Taito Ban as Watarase
- Junichi Suwabe as Hiroshi Nakagawa
- Kenjiro Tsuda as Nobuo Koyama
Asano published the original manga in Shogakukan‘s Big Comic Spirits magazine from April 28, 2014, to February 28, 2022, and it reached a total of 12 compiled volumes.
Synopsis
At some point in the near future, a gigantic alien spaceship positions itself over the skies of Tokyo, without warning or any warlike actions of any kind. It simply appears there, and remains, ominous and imposing. And despite the million questions that arise in everyone’s minds, life continues “relatively” normally, albeit with their day-to-day altered by a touch of surrealism and fear of the unknown.
The main story begins 3 years after these events and focuses on the lives of two high school students, Kadode Koyama and her best friend, Ouran Nakagawa, who are in the midst of adolescence, and as expected, deal day-to-day with the typical problems of their age: love, friendship, academic aspirations, and the uncertainty of the future. We could almost say they lead “normal lives”, were it not for that ever-present factor, something that exerts a pressure, we might almost say, “psychological” over everyone, the gigantic spaceship perched in the sky of Tokyo.
The plot explores deep themes, such as dehumanization, social apathy, the effects of war, and media manipulation. Although the presence of that imposing ship in the sky might be the main element of the story, it leans more towards the introspective exploration of its characters and the society in which they live, making this supposed invasion a catalyzing agent that exposes the shortcomings and contradictions of human society.
This dystopian reality created by Asano‘s unique narrative style is the result of the author’s talent for highly detailed environments and well-developed characters, mixed with elements of science fiction and surrealism. Frankly, it would be somewhat difficult (and perhaps unfair) to categorize “Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction” into a single category, whether science fiction or drama.
Undoubtedly an unusual invitation to take that uncomfortable look at everyday life and social issues, all seen through the adolescent lens that undoubtedly lacks many of our prejudices…
Not much more to say. You’ll be watching, right? Come on, be good, and tell us what you think of this new proposal in the comments. We’ll be reading! 😉
