On the official site for the anime adaptation of Riichiro Inagaki and Boichi’s manga, “Dr. STONE,” the premiere of its final season was announced for some time in the next year 2025 in Japan. According to the press release, this final season will last three cours (or three broadcasting quarters, making a total of nine months), but each will be aired separately.
We can assume that this final season will last at least 36 episodes, though the fact that its airing is spaced out among its three parts makes us think that, in the worst-case scenario, we could receive one part per year, which would extend the end of our beloved “Dr. STONE” possibly until 2027. If that were the case, it wouldn’t make sense to start broadcasting a “final season” in 2025, right?
Let’s remember that Riichiro Inagaki and Boichi began publishing the manga in Shueisha‘s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in March 2017 and concluded it in March 2022. The work inspired a twenty-four-episode anime adaptation produced by TMS Entertainment, under the direction of Shinya Iino and scripts written by Yuichiro Kido, premiered in July 2019. It was followed by a second season in Winter-2021 (January-March) and a third in Autumn-2023 (October-December).
What is “Dr. STONE” about?
After five years of harboring unexpressed feelings, high school student Taiju Ooki is finally ready to confess his love to Yuzuriha Ogawa. However, just as Taiju begins his confession, a blinding green light strikes the Earth and petrifies humanity worldwide, turning every human into stone. Several millennia later, Taiju wakes up to find the modern world completely nonexistent, as nature has flourished in the years when humanity was halted.
Among a stone world of statues, Taiju encounters another living human: his science-loving friend Senkuu, who has been active for a few months. Taiju learns that Senkuu has developed a grand plan: to launch the complete rebirth of civilization with science. Taiju’s strength and Senkuu’s brains combine to forge a formidable partnership, and they soon discover a method to revive the petrified. However, Senkuu’s master plan is threatened when their ideologies are challenged by those who awaken. Meanwhile, the reason for humanity’s petrification remains unknown.
I think we’re all super eager to find out what fate has in store for Taiju and company, so, resignation in hand, we’ll have no choice but to stay tuned for future announcements about the future of this franchise. So while we wait, why not swing by the comments and tell us what you think about this news? Or your favorite moments from previous seasons, you surely have them! You know, we’ll be reading! 😉
