Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is an action role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix, serving as the sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020) and the second in a planned trilogy that remakes the original 1997 PlayStation game. Like its predecessor, it combines real-time action with strategic and role-playing elements. Its release is scheduled for this February 29th, which is less than a week from now, and will be exclusive to PlayStation 5.
The game’s development was confirmed during the promotion of Final Fantasy VII Remake, with Square Enix noting that it would not cover the full story of the original but would act as a standalone first game in a multi-part series. Game director Tetsuya Nomura cited the enormous task of rebuilding Final Fantasy VII with current technology as the reason why a remake was not feasible for some time. Producer Yoshinori Kitase compared the “multi-part” structure of the remake to the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy, anticipating that each game in the Remake series would be approximately as long as one of the Final Fantasy XIII games.
Rebirth was revealed alongside Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion, a remaster of Crisis Core for modern platforms that uses Unreal Engine 4 and implements gameplay and presentation improvements to align the game with Remake. Reunion was part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake project and served as a prequel to the main trilogy.
Regarding marketing and release, Rebirth was announced by Square Enix as the second installment of the Final Fantasy VII Remake project in June 2022. Also in June, but of 2023, it was promised that Rebirth would feature a ‘broad and multifaceted world with a high degree of freedom‘ with multiple story paths, compared to the more structured and linear progression through Midgar in Remake. A gameplay trailer presented in June 2023 during that year’s Summer Game Fest showcased the game’s exploration and combat mechanics, hinting at various story elements and detailing the characters that will appear in the game. A new trailer revealed at The Game Awards 2023 showcased the song ‘No Promises To Keep‘ by Loren Allred, as well as new gameplay footage, including Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind.
