Very recently, during a special event for the “Gotoubun no Hanayome” (“The Quintessential Quintuplets”) franchise, the production of a new original anime was officially announced, to be simply titled “Gotoubun no Hanayome”. According to the announcement, and in line with a previous leak, this new project will feature an original story written and supervised by Negi Haruba, the original manga’s author, and will narrate the honeymoon journey of Futaro and the quintuplets.
As if this weren’t enough, as part of the same announcement, it was also revealed that the franchise will get a new original light novel, which, although credited to Negi Haruba in concept, will be written by Hajime Asano (Mayo Chiki!, Lapis Re:LiGHTs). This light novel will focus on the daily life of the quintuplets that wasn’t covered in the original manga, although it has not yet been specified where in the story this new plot will be set.
As we recall, the manga was initially published by Negi Haruba in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine from August 2017 to February 2020, reaching a total of 14 collected volumes available in the Japanese market. This wonderful work inspired an anime adaptation that featured 12 episodes, produced by Tezuka Productions and premiered in Winter 2019, followed by a new season in winter 2021, and then a movie in May 2022, both produced by Bibury Animation Studios, which concluded the main canonical story.
Later, in September 2023, SHAFT studios produced a new anime project that adapted parts of the original manga that had not been covered in previous projects. This production attracted public attention by offering a completely different style of drawing and animation than previously seen in the franchise, far exceeding fans’ expectations.
What is “Gotoubun no Hanayome” About?
“Gotoubun no Hanayome“, also known in English as “The Quintessential Quintuplets“, revolves around the life of Futaro Uesugi, an extremely intelligent high school student from a poor family. His life takes an unexpected turn when he is offered a job as a private tutor for the Nakano sisters, who turn out to be quintuplets. Despite their beauty, each of the sisters has academic issues and very different personalities that initially test Futaro‘s patience and skills.
As Futaro begins to work with the quintuplets—Ichika, Nino, Miku, Yotsuba, and Itsuki—he discovers that his main challenge is not only academic but also personal. Each sister has her own dreams, fears, and obstacles to overcome, which complicates their relationship with studying and with each other. Throughout the series, Futaro not only helps the girls improve their grades but also plays a crucial role in strengthening their bonds with each other and in their individual growth. The plot delves into family and personal dynamics, exploring themes such as identity, responsibility, and love.
The development of “The Quintessential Quintuplets” culminates in Futaro Uesugi‘s marriage to one of the Nakano sisters, a long-anticipated moment that perfectly closes the original series. From this event, the story takes a new direction in the next animation project, which will explore Futaro’s honeymoon journey with his wife and the other sisters. This new chapter promises to offer an exciting mix of adventures and touching moments, expanding the family dynamics and delving deeper into the relationships among all the characters. With this new focus, the series aims not only to continue the narrative but also to deepen the shared experiences that define and enrich the protagonists’ lives.
