It happened at JUMP FESTA 2024. A message written by Gege Akutami was presented, stating that “this would be the last Jump Festa during which Jujutsu Kaisen would be serialized”. In this way, the author confirmed that his iconic work will conclude at some point before December 2024, when the next edition of Jump Festa is scheduled.
Looking back, we have already heard such statements from Gege Akutami. During the Jump Festa 2023 event, which took place last December, the author had indicated plans to conclude the series “a year after that date”. Before that, in February 2021, he said that “the series would end two years from then”, and if we think about it, neither of these timelines has been fulfilled.
The shared message was:
“This is probably the last Jump Festa where ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ will be published. An exhibition of original illustrations is set for next summer. Even though it’s this kind of exhibition, ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ is made with digital manuscripts, how the heck am I going to do something like this? After discussing it with the big shots, we decided to use some materials I have, like names and drafts, to create an exhibition that makes people think: ‘I also want to draw manga!’ We are currently trying out different materials. Keep striving! And all of you, please come to the exhibition when it starts!”
To add to the surprise, whether real or not, the cover of the twenty-fifth collected volume of the work was also revealed during the event, which you can see below. Its release date is set for January 4, 2024, in Japan. The literary work has already exceeded 90 million copies in circulation to date.
Some context:
The publication of the manga Jujutsu Kaisen was initiated by Gege Akutami in Shueisha‘s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in March 2018. The first season of the anime adaptation premiered in the Autumn of 2022 (October – December), comprising a total of 24 episodes. This was followed by an animated movie, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, released in December 2021 in Japanese cinemas. Currently, the second season of the anime is airing.
You know what Jujutsu Kaisen is about, right?
Well, it would be strange if you didn’t know such a story, but just in case, here’s some lore.
Yuuji Itadori is a high school student who engages in baseless paranormal activities with the Occult Club. He usually spends his days in the club room, or at the hospital, visiting his bedridden grandfather. But, as in every good story, there’s a “but”, his days of serene calm take an unexpected change when, without even imagining it, he comes across a cursed object.
Yuuji triggers a series of supernatural events, suddenly finding himself in the world of “Curses”, terrible beings formed from human malice and negativity. At a certain point, with no other options to preserve his and others’ lives, he decides to swallow the talisman, the cursed object he had found at his school, which turns out to be a relic, a finger belonging to the demon Sukuna Ryoumen, the “King of Curses”.
Yuuji experiences firsthand the threat curses pose to society, while discovering his newfound powers. Then, upon being taken to Tokyo Metropolitan Jujutsu Technical High School, he begins to walk the path he was destined for, from which there is no return: the path of a Jujutsu sorcerer.
