October 3, 2024

During the anniversary special event for the franchise, the production of a second season for this animated adaptation of Sousou no Frieren, based on the manga of the same name by Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe, was announced. As we know, early announcements like these don’t typically reveal information about the production team or release dates, but it was confirmed—much to the surprise of many—that Madhouse Studios will continue to handle the production.

Let’s remember that Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe started publishing their manga through the Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine, under the Shogakukan publishing house, in April 2020. The series is still ongoing and has surpassed 7.2 million copies in circulation. As for the anime adaptation, as mentioned earlier, Madhouse Studios produced it, and it aired during the Fall 2023 season (October – December) in Japan, with a total of 28 episodes.

Production Team of the First Season

  • Keiichirou Saitou (Bocchi the Rock!, Wonder Egg Priority, Boogiepop wa Warawanai) directed the anime at Madhouse Studios.
  • Tomohiro Suzuki (One Punch Man 2, Boogiepop wa Warawanai, DOUBLE DECKER! Doug & Kirill) was in charge of writing and supervising the scripts.
  • Reiko Nagasawa (Takt Op. Destiny, Summer Time Render, Shika no Ou: Yuna to Yakusoku no Tabi) was responsible for character design and animation direction.
  • Evan Call (Violet Evergarden) composed the soundtrack.

Synopsis

Sousou no Frieren follows the story of Frieren, an elf mage who has lived for centuries, accompanied by her human companions on an epic mission to defeat the Demon King. After their victory, the heroes part ways to live their own lives, but Frieren, due to her longevity, watches as her friends age and die over time. The story delves into how immortals like Frieren perceive time, contrasting it with the fleeting lives of humans. Throughout the series, Frieren reflects on the relationships she formed during her adventures, painfully realizing how little she understood her companions and the emotional connections she failed to fully appreciate at the time.

The story begins at the twilight of Himmel‘s life, the leader of the group of heroes. Frieren returns after fifty years to fulfill a promise to watch a meteor shower, only to find that Himmel has aged and is nearing death. As she witnesses the deaths of Himmel and other companions, Frieren embarks on a new journey, this time in search of a deeper understanding of humanity and the meaning of life. Along her journey, she confronts the memories of her time with Himmel, Heiter, and Eisen, while also forming new bonds, leading her to reflect on what it truly means to live a full life.

As Frieren embarks on this new adventure, guided by the memory of her old friends, she also faces new challenges and dangers. The story is not about grand epic battles, but rather small moments of introspection, where magic and fantastic adventures serve as the backdrop for a deeper narrative about the nature of relationships, life, death, and the passage of time. Frieren, who seems invulnerable to physical suffering, realizes that her greatest challenge is emotional: learning to value people and accepting the limitations of her own immortality.

If you haven’t been living under a rock for the past few years, you undoubtedly already know what Sousou no Frieren is, but whether you’re familiar with the franchise or not, we invite you to dive into this magical universe and, like us, await the continuation of this thrilling adventure.
