Several weeks ago, Junji Ito himself had announced that the anime “Uzumaki” was ready for its premiere. However, as we all knew, anything said about this franchise had to be taken with a grain of salt, even the author’s word, after so many delays and postponements. Well, now we can definitely talk about the premiere of the anime “Uzumaki,” which will reach us through Toonami (Adult Swim) very soon, on September 28, 2024.
Did we mention a trailer? Well, here it is:
Okay, now that you’ve seen the trailer, we can discuss it fully: “Uzumaki” will premiere in exactly 2 months, and it will be broadcast during the Toonami programming block corresponding to September 28, although the premiere via the MAX platform will be the following day, September 29. The information released specifically pertains to the USA, so we must stay tuned to see if the same days and times apply to other parts of the world.
“Uzumaki,” this bizarre gem of modern art, will consist of only 4 episodes. Junji Ito stated at the beginning of this month that the production of the first of these episodes had been completed. With that in mind, the question now is whether all four episodes will be released simultaneously, or if each episode will be broadcast weekly. We hope that clarification on this point will be made public in the coming weeks.
Perhaps “Uzumaki” will be the anime that finally does justice to Junji Ito’s work, at least considering what we’ve seen in the preview, it seems that it will be. Currently, we all know that Production I.G. is one of the best Japanese animation studios, a position it has held for several years. Therefore, it is clear that in the production of “Uzumaki,” they wanted to rely on some kind of assurance, since to date, most of the anime based on Junji Ito’s works have not lived up to the expectations held for them, so positively, and with some luck, “Uzumaki” will be the work that changes all that.
Synopsis, or something like that…
“Uzumaki,” created by Junji Ito, is a horror manga that follows the residents of the fictional city of Kurouzu-cho, who find themselves caught up in supernatural events that are, at least initially, all related to spirals. This peculiar shape not only manifests physically in the environment but also influences and distorts people both psychologically and physically, creating a distinctly marked atmosphere of latent mental and physical horror.
The original manga consists of a total of 19 chapters, grouped into three volumes. Throughout these chapters, interconnected stories are presented that explore different aspects of the spiral theme, each with its own self-contained narrative, but all contributing to the larger story of the curse consuming the city. As the story progresses, the citizens of Kurouzu-cho experience horrific transformations and destructive obsessions with spirals, leading to a chilling exploration of how a common symbol can become a source of profound terror.
As we have been able to appreciate in the trailer, these cursed spirals are very present in the adaptation, which can only bode well, at least for those of us who have had the fortune to read the manga, then see the trailer, and notice those strong similarities so prevalent in the adaptation, we can’t be anything but eager for the upcoming release.
Now, how about you take a turn in the comments and let us know your opinion about this spir… I mean… news? You know, we’ll be reading! 😉
